Everything you need to know about the Moon Phase

What is Tithi?

Tithi is a lunar day in the Hindu Panchang (calendar) system. It represents the angular distance between the Sun and Moon, measured in increments of 12 degrees. There are 30 Tithis in a complete lunar month — 15 in the waxing phase (Shukla Paksha) and 15 in the waning phase (Krishna Paksha). Each Tithi has its own nature and deity, making it important for determining auspicious timing (Muhurat) and personality analysis.

Paksha refers to the two fortnights of the lunar month. Shukla Paksha (bright half) runs from New Moon (Amavasya) to Full Moon (Purnima), and Krishna Paksha (dark half) runs from Full Moon to New Moon. People born during Shukla Paksha are believed to have more externally directed energy and public success, while those born during Krishna Paksha tend to be more introspective and spiritually inclined. The specific Tithi within each Paksha further refines these tendencies.

The phase of the Moon at your birth reflects your emotional nature and instinctive patterns. Born near the New Moon, you may be a natural initiator with strong willpower. Born near the Full Moon, you tend to be expressive, social, and emotionally aware. The waxing quarter suggests growth-oriented energy, while the waning quarter indicates wisdom and releasing patterns. In Vedic astrology, the birth Tithi also determines the starting letter for naming and is used in all Muhurat calculations.
