Why is the Ascendant So Important?
The Lagna is the foundation of the entire birth chart. Every house in the horoscope is numbered starting from the Ascendant sign. The lord of the Ascendant (Lagnesh) is one of the most important planets in the chart, influencing health, personality, and overall life direction. A strong Ascendant and Ascendant lord indicate good physical vitality and a positive outlook on life. Many Vedic astrologers consider the Ascendant even more important than the Sun sign for predicting life events.
How is the Ascendant Calculated?
Calculating the Ascendant requires three pieces of information: the date of birth, the exact time of birth (to the minute), and the geographical coordinates of the birth location. Using these inputs, the astronomical algorithm determines which degree of which zodiac sign was crossing the eastern horizon at that precise moment. Even a few minutes' difference in birth time can shift the Ascendant by several degrees, and in some cases, change the Ascendant sign entirely.
